The town was settled in the
1880’s by Mormon pioneers. Legend has it
that Torrey was named after Colonel Jay L. Torrey who was in charge
of the Rough Riders at the time of obtaining their first
United States Post Office. Theodore
Roosevelt took one of the Rough Rider units and later
became famous. Colonel Jay L. Torrey also ran
against Theodore Roosevelt in the race to
become Vice President of the United States of
America.
